JUNE BONFIRE FESTIVALS
June bonfire festivals are among the most appealing aspects of Brazilian folklore. Throughout the city, in streets, squares, clubs, schools and churches, mini country villages are set up with stalls of seasonal delicacies and games, decorated with little flags, banners and lanterns. Square dancing and a mock country wedding take place by the light of bonfires and fireworks. The tradition of dancing around the bonfire and leaping over the flames used to be common throughout Europe, as part of various rural mid-year festivals. In Rio, these festivities are centered on the feasts of St. Anthony (13th), St.John (24th) and St. Peter (29th).

ZUMBI DOS PALMARES
Date celebrating the anniversary of the death of the blck leader, who set the interior of Brazil in motion in the 17th century by forming the Quilombo (slave hideout) of Palmares, as a resistance against slavery. This is also National Black Pride Day honoring the man who dedicated his life to fighting for freedom of his race. This date is celebrated with ceremonies at the Zumbi Monument.

NATIONAL SAMBA DAY
The idea of having a day to celebrate samba was born at the closing of the I National Congress that took place between November 28 and December 2, 1962 when Samba Day was instituted. Created by decree, the date is a tribute to artists and all those who through the years have turned Carnaval into the greatest expression of Brazilian popular culture. On 9 October, 2007, IPHAN, the National Artistic Heritage Institute advisory committee voted the approval of the Carioca samba as cultural heritage of Brazil in its three main forms of expression: “partido alto” samba, backyard samba and samba storylines (plots).

CHRISTMAS
The streets are bustling with the coming and going of Cariocas doing their Christmas shopping. The idea is to find a surprise gift for someone special. It is the desire to share the unique Christmas spirit, with friendship, peace and love.
The city is full of lights. The decorations and colored lights on The Flamengo Aterro, the lights along the sea-fronts and the decorations of the shopping malls, attract mainly the children, with the traditional presence of Santa. Downtown, the cultural centers and churches open their doors to Christmas carol concerts. The mangers in the churches invite one to reflect, as well as being special attractions at the Nossa Senhora da Paz church.

nEW YEARS'EVE
The special atmosphere, full of magic and hope, are typical of the Carioca New Year. New Year´s Eve is considered to be the 2nd greatest event in Rio´s tourist calendar, bringing together millions of people along Copacabana beach front, nearly all wearing white, to watch the spectacular firework display, which brings in the New Year.
